Women empowerment is giving women the tools, resources, and opportunities necessary to achieve gender equality and improve their social, economic, and political status. This can include promoting women’s education, increasing their access to healthcare, and supporting their leadership roles in society. By empowering women, we can create a more equal and just world for all.
All this leads to improved quality of life for women and their families. Gender equality also contributes to the overall economic and social development of a society.
The 7 Women's Empowerment Principles
The Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a set of seven principles established by the United Nations Global Compact and UN Women to guide businesses on how to promote gender equality and empower women in the workplace, marketplace, and community.
The principles are:
- Establish high-level corporate leadership for gender equality,
- Treat all women and men fairly at work – respect and support human rights and non-discrimination,
- Ensure the health, safety and well-being of all women and men workers,
- Promote education, training and professional development for women,
- Implement enterprise development, supply chain and marketing practices that empower women,
- Promote equality through community initiatives and advocacy, and
- Measure and publicly report on progress to achieve gender equality.
While there have been significant advances in recent years, there is still so much work to be done to ensure that women everywhere have equal opportunities and rights, hence these principles.
